Red Diamonds
Red Diamonds are the rarest of the fancy color diamonds. In fact, they are so rare in nature that most jewelers and diamond dealers have never even seen a natural red diamond. The world’s largest red diamond is known as the Red Shield, and weighs “only” 5.11 carats, compared with over 600 carats for the largest diamond of any kind.
GREEN DIAMONDS
Pure green diamonds are very rare since their natural green color comes from exposure to irradiated particles over eons of time. With perhaps only a handful of new substantial green diamonds being introduced to the market each year pure green stones are more highly valued than the yellowish green or green-yellows.
Origin
Found predominately in regions of Africa and South Africa, green diamonds acquire their color because during formation they are in close proximity to naturally occurring sources of radiation. The elusive green diamond captivates some of the most prominent of diamond connoisseurs.
Dresden Green Diamond
The 40.70-carat Dresden Green is a rare type IIa diamond measuring 29.75 × 19.88 × 10.29mm. As the largest known natural green diamond in the world it rivals the most notable natural color diamonds history and lore.
Auction house Sotheby’s Geneva sold a rare 2.52 carat green diamond in 2008 to an anonymous buyer for a whopping 2.05 million euros. It is the highest sum a vivid green diamond has ever fetched.
